I’ve had my Wii U for six months now and that the warm fuzzy feeling of having a new console has just about worn off. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still having a great time gaming on it, and Nintendo TVii is a great feature to have, but after two months of playing the same games and talking about the same games on Miiverse, I’m ready for Nintendo to begin the process of improving upon the Wii U and its feature set to bring the console to its full potential. In this post, I’ll share a few ideas I’ve had since picking up Nintendo’s new console… Let me know what you think Nintendo should do to make the Wii U an essential part of any respectable gaming rig.

Trophies/Achievements

Yeah, those of you who know me knew this was where I was going to begin. So let’s get this one over with… Nintendo has opted for not having an overarching trophy/achievement system, and leaving it up to the developers to implement any such system into their individual games. I’ve heard some say that this encourages devs to have freedom when developing Wii U titles. I see this more as Nintendo either appeasing the development community over the fanbase which ultimately provide Nintendo with capital… and/or Nintendo being lazy and keeping Nintendo Network as simple as possible. Either way, I think it’s a bunch of bullshit, and having an overarching trophy/achievement system would ensure that the Wii U will have a higher attachment rate, and sell more multi-platform games on the system. Oh, and let’s face it, who wouldn’t love to earn a platinum (or whatever Nintendo’s equivalent would be) on a Zelda or Metroid game. If you haven’t signed the Wii U trophy/achievement support petition, make sure to do so here.

Use the Pro-Controller

Nintendo went to the trouble or creating the Pro-Controller so that core gamers would have access to an input device they are familiar with. I mean the WiiMotes are great for motion games and occasionally with some strategy titles, but when it comes to shooters, platformers and action games, the modern controller is king. From the d-pad on the classic NES controller, to the thumb sticks on the PlayStation Dual Shock, the controllers we use today are an evolution of the the refinements which have

Widescreen On Virtual Console

Virtual Console is awesome. It allows me to do my annual play through of ‘The Legend of Zelda’ without worrying about losing my game save due to a 25+ year old battery in my gold cart. I enjoy the option to play on the gamepad, and save at any point I choose, but this is Nintendo’s first HD console, so I had hopes of seeing my favorite classics in their best form. Having two big ass black bars on either side of the screen just makes me think Nintendo is being lazy… SEGA classics on other platforms can be played in 16:9 without looking like total shit. I just expect Nintendo to at least try as hard as SEGA. Is that too much to ask?

Play Wii Games From the Wii U Interface

I’m rather fond of the backwards compatibility of the Wii U… especially since I missed out on some great games on the Wii. The games look great playing on the Wii U, but having to switch from the Wii U interface to the Wii interface to play the games of a past generation is a bit of a pain. I don’t know all of the details of how the games are run (software emulation, or directly from the hardware), but seeing as the Wii and Wii U were designed using the same chip architecture, I would assume it would be possible to run Wii games from the Wii U interface. I do understand it would be challenging, considering the Wii used a different primary input device for the games to respond to, but what worthy computer scientist isn’t up for a good challenge?

Bundlemania!!!

Sales are down since launch, so it’s time to bundle up. In my opinion, every Wii U console should include Nintendo Land… it just makes sense. The Wii U has so many new and unique features, throwing a copy (physical is preferred) the game that showcases the system’s features should be a no brainer. It’s not like Nintendo is going to lose money, and the game itself has already dropped in price. Nintendo has claimed that Nintendo Land is the Wii Sports of the Wii U, and Wii Sports is what put the Wii console in millions of homes… so just do it already. Also, bundling in a pro controller, and whichever AAA game is prominent at the time will seduce more skeptical gamers to take the plunge.

Deeper Mii Customization

The Mii is a Nintendo user’s virtual being in Nintendo’s universe… and while some have shown uncanny creativity in designing Miis, some deeper customization options would be great for not just offering a more personalized Nintendo experience, but also boosting console attachment rate. At least add more colors for Miis to wear, and the option to color coordinate you Mii’s shirt and pants (did I really just say that).

Get Social

Miiverse is probably my favorite feature which is unique to the Wii U. I’ve probably spent more time conversing with Nintendo Network users than actually playing games on the system. But Miiverse needs to go beyond the closed confines of just on Wii U, and reach out to the world. Nintendo has said that Miiverse will see implementation including PC and mobile device access, but what I want to see is Facebook and Twitter integration. Users are sharing some amazing artwork, and some hilarious screenshots… I’d just like to share them with my friends who don’t have a Wii U yet.

Price Drop

It’s time. We are 6 months into the the Wii U’s lifecycle, and Sony and Microsoft are gearing up to release their next generation platforms which will have performance specs well beyond what the Wii U is capable of. But if the original Wii showed us anything, power is not as important as price when it comes to the average consumer. If Nintendo can have the Wii U sitting next to the PS4 and NextBOX, and be one to two hundred dollars cheaper, they will move many systems this Christmas. If they could get the Deluxe’s price point to $250 by summer’s end, Nintendo will be a monster at retailers.

Closing

I have presented a few ideas that I think could help to make the Wii U very successful, but I’m sure Nintendo are thinking about things like this as I type. As a Wii U owner I want the console to succeed, as it means more great games for us to play. E3 is just around the corner, and hopefully we’ll see some new games and features to get excited about. But until then, what features/ideas do you have which would make the Wii U more successful?

We already knew 2013 was going to be a great year, but with the recent announcement that the PlayStation 4 will be coming out in the holiday season, and rumors circulating that the new XBOX will be announced soon, 2013 just kicked it up to 11. With so many great games and new hardware coming out way, most of us have to be a bit more selective in what we buy… unless you’re rich… then you can buy whatever the hell you want, I guess. Well, I don’t have the problem of being rich, so I have to be picky… and my pick for the month of March 2013 is Bioshock Infinite. There are definitely other great contenders this month, but if I have to recommend one game it has to be Bioshock.
